Burton Elementary School
Located in SE Grand Rapids, Burton Elementary is home to some of the most under-resourced children in Grand Rapids, with 98% of its students receiving free or reduced-cost lunches because their households are at or below the poverty level.
Yet, while the need is great, things are slowly beginning to turn around. Over the past 6 years, Burton Elementary has gone from being ranked in the 3rd percentile by the Michigan Department of Education to the 19th percentile. Our work is far from done, but change is truly beginning to take root, and we are honored to be part of a large community that is rallying around this school.
Working alongside Cherry Health Clinic which provides onsite medical care, an onsite Department of Human Services caseworker who helps our families access resources, and an onsite Arbor Circle therapist, among others—our mentoring program is part of a holistic approach to education that’s centered around our students.
